A senior figure in the Social Democrat Party, Maarit Feldt-Ranta, has said she won’t continue her general election campaign, due the return of stomach cancer.

In an open letter on Facebook, Feldt-Ranta writes that the cancer had returned once again, after previous diagnosis in 2009 and 2013.

“The bad news is always hard to tell, but it is a part of life. My bad news is that my stomach cancer has recurred. That is why I will remain on sick leave as a Member of Parliament, and I will no longer be able to stand for the spring Parliamentary elections” the SDP’s second vice chair says in her post.

The Raseborg MP’s first cancer diagnosis was in 2009, and it returned in 2013. After recovering, she returned to parliament in 2014 and was elected again as a member of parliament in 2015.

Most recently, Feldt-Ranta has been working as the party’s second deputy leader and she was supposed to share some of the duties of the current party leader Antti Rinne who is himself on sick leave.
