The Greens have announced the names of their three ministers in Finland’s next coalition government.

Outgoing party chair Pekka Haavisto (61) a former UN envoy and two time presidential candidate becomes Foreign Minister as expected.

The party’s next leader Maria Ohisalo (34) a newly elected MP who takes over from Haavisto at the Greens’ summer conference next week, becomes Interior Minister.

The third ministerial slot to be filled by the Greens was a close-fought race when party members voted, but Krista Mikkonen (46) emerged the winner as Minister of Environment and Climate Change, beating out carbon-neutral expert Oras Tynkkynen by one vote.

The new ministers will have their official ceremony and confirmation votes – expected to be a rubber stamp formality – in parliament on Thursday.
