The number of students applying to study in English at Aalto University has skyrocketed 26% in the past year according to the latest figures.
With the application period just ended, the university received more than 6600 applications: 3779 for master’s programmes in English, and 2824 for undergraduate degree studies in English.
The new figures from the university show that almost half of the applications for master’s degree studies came from outside the EU and EEA – mostly from China, India and Pakistan.
Some 32% of the applications for master’s degree programmes in English came from Finnish students.
“As we see with our increase in international rankings in Times Higher Education, there is a growing awareness of Aalto as a top university and attractive destination. These application numbers echo that interest and offer a healthy indicator to our competitiveness” says Vice President of Education Petri Suomala.
New degree programmes in English
This year the university is launching a range of new undergraduate degree programmes in English, including: economics; design; chemical engineering; computational engineering and quantum technology. This adds to their core studies already available in English like data science; international business; digital systems and design.
Figures show that 45% of applicants for undergraduate degree programmes in English came from outside the EU and EEA.
“We want to continue to ensure that we offer tremendous opportunity to be part of our community, to join one of the best learning cultures in the world” says Petri Suomela.
