Finnair sets new record with June passenger numbers

The increase in passenger numbers seems to fly in the face of calls by environmental groups to reduce emissions by taking less flights.

June was a record month for Finnair flights, as the national carrier flew 1.4 million passengers, up 11.9% from the previous year.

The biggest increase in numbers was on North America routes, up 34.8% with new routes to Los Angeles and extra flights to San Francisco taking more passengers to the USA’s west coast.

Asia passenger numbers increased as well, up 9.4% over the previous June. Additional flights to Hong Kong and Osaka are part of the reason. Three new A350 aircraft to serve long-haul routes were brought into service in December, February and April contributing to the new June record figures.

Europe flights also saw a boost with extra capacity to Stockholm, St, Petersburg, London and Moscow; plus new seasonal routes to Hannover, Trondheim and Bologna leading to a 11.2% increase in passenger numbers for June.

Domestic passenger numbers were up as well, by 5.2%.
