With the Midsummer holidays approaching, VR is gearing up for one of its busiest travel weeks of the year.

Around 230,000 passengers are expected to take the train this week, with 130,000 of them traveling during Midsummer weekend.

The most popular routes are from Helsinki to Tampere, Turku, Seinäjoki, Jyväaskylä and Kouvola.

“Tickets for the most popular train routes are starting to sell out, but most trains still have room for Midsummer travellers, however you should be quick to buy tickets” says VR’s service manager Piia Tyynilä.

The busiest single day is Thursday afternoon right before the holiday weekend, and there’s extra staff on duty at Helsinki and Tampere stations to help make sure passenger flow goes as smoothly as possible.

Changes to Midsummer train timetables

Over the holiday period there will be changes to VR’s timetables.

Long distance trains on Thursday and Friday run on a Saturday schedule; while Saturday and Sunday trains run on a Sunday timetable.

Services on long distance routes return to normal on Sunday evening.

For short-haul commuter routes VR operates a weekend schedule from Friday to Sunday.
