Investigators are working to determine the cause of a late night blaze which destroyed an apartment in Lahti, and put two people in hospital.

Rescue crews were called to the five-storey building on Luhtikatu in the city’s Liipola neighbourhood around 22:00 on Monday night and found thick smoke coming from one of the top-floor flats.

As the intensity of the fire increased, firefighters made the decision to evacuate the 50 people who were in the building at the time. The heat of the fire shattered windows and spread to the eaves and into the roof structure of the building.

One man in the burning apartment was rescued and taken to hospital for treatment. Later, another person was also taken to hospital.

On Tuesday morning fire crews were still on the scene of the blaze, which left one apartment completely destroyed and another with a lot of water damage.

Early indications are that the fire began in the kitchen of the burned apartment.
