Italian President Visits Finland

The President of Italy begins a state visit to Finland today. Sergio Mattarella accompanied by his daughter. President Sauli Niinistö and the first lady Jenni Haukio will host them at the Presidential Palance in Helsinki. According to the president’s office, the two leaders will be discussing economic and political relations. The Italian President will also meet with the speaker of Parliament and Prime Minister Juha Sipilä (Centre).

Parliament Transparency

The Chief Executive of Finland’s parliament concedes that a public dispute with media houses is hurting its reputation. His comments come after the Editors-in-Chief of 29 prominent Finnish media companies complained to the Parliamentary Ombudsman about parliament’s practice of deleting visitor logs at the end of each day. In our original story, we talked to both sides of this disagreement, and get the views of presidential candidate Pekka Haavisto, who says there should be more openness and transparency at all levels of government, including the presidency.

Rohingya Aid Mission

Finnish Red Cross experts are heading to Bangladesh today, to help at a hospital treating Rohingya Muslims who have fled violence in Myanmar. They’ll be working in a joint Finnish-Norwegian hospital at Cox’s Bazaar, a town near the border where many Rohingya have gathered in refugee camps. Since the end of August, more than 420,000 people have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh, many of whom are women and children. The Finnish medical team will be part of the effort to treat the injured and sick at the field hospital.


The weather on Tuesday morning starts out mild across the the whole country but also with widespread mist and fog, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute FMI. Temperatures in the south of Finland will reach +12°C at the start of the day, while in central Finland they’ll dip down as low as +2°C in some inland spots but general begin Tuesday morning around +6°C. In Lapland, temperatures will reach +8°C although there might be a touch of frost in remote areas of the north east.
