More than a thousand pigs die in early morning fire

There were 5400 pigs in the barn at the time of the fire and many were killed outright in the blaze, while others are suffering from smoke inhalation.

At least 1200 pigs have died in a fire at a farm near Seinäjoki.

Rescue crews got the alarm call around 05:00 on Monday morning and when they arrived at the scene they found the 7000 sq metre barn already engulfed.

At the time of the blaze there were 5400 pigs inside the bar, and in addition to the ones which died, many others are suffering from smoke inhalation with vets set to make decisions about what to do with them.

Firefighters worked for more than three hours to bring the fire under control. Police have started an investigation into the cause of the fire.
