The National Bureau of Investigations confirms that the woman killed on Tuesday in Kuopio by a sword-wielding attacker was a Ukrainian citizen.
The woman, born in 1996, studied at Savo Vocational College, as did the suspect.
On Friday morning a judge at North Savo District Court remanded the 24-year old, now officially named as Joel Otto Aukusti Marin, in custody.
He wasn’t physically present in the court room, which was closed to the press and public during proceedings, as he is still receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained when he was shot by officers on Tuesday afternoon.
Instead, Marin appeared via video link from Kuopio University Hospital.
“We will continue our intensive investigation after the remand hearing. We have already interviewed the suspect, but we will still conduct a number of further interviews of the suspect, and of other persons as well” Detective Chief Inspector Olli Töyräs, who is leading the investigation, said in a Friday statement.
“However, investigations into the motive and some underlying facts of the case ar ea long-term process and require a full review of the suspect’s history” Töyräs added.
Marin has been remanded in custody on probably cause for one murder and nine attempted murders. The deadline for bringing more charges against him is 13th February 2020.
