Helsinki’s Oodi Central Library has won the title of world’s best new public library.

It was chosen at the World Library and Information Congress which is taking place in Athens this week.

The annual Public Library of the Year award is presented to a library that is either newly built or set up in premises not previously used for library purposes.

This year 16 libraries from all over the world applied to be considered for the award and the finalists came from Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

“The customers immediately make Oodi their own, which is our greatest success” says Oodi Director Anna-Maria Soininvaara.

“The Public Library of the Year award tells us that the world has also taken notice of this” she adds.
