More than 63,000 people have signed a petition calling on the government to use Finland’s EU Presidency to do more to fight climate change.
After six months of collecting signatures, the Ilmastoveivi climate campaign came to an end on Monday with a rally in Helsinki’s Kansalaistori.
The non-partisan group aimed to put pressure on EU government to commit to limit global warming to 1.5°C and to agree on more ambitious climate change targets during Finland’s six-month Presidency of the European Council.
Backed by 200 businesses and organisations, Ilmastoveivi seems to have achieved its goals, as the fight against climate change is at the top of both the government’s policy programme and the EU Presidency agenda.
Ilmastoveivi organisers handed over their petition to government representatives at their rally on Monday afternoon, with speeches from environmental activists and performances from Finnish acts like Darude and Eva+Manu.
