A young conductor from Lahti has been appointed as principal conductor of the London Philharmonia orchestra.
Santtu-Matias Rouvali, 33, replaces another Finn Esa-Pekka Salonen in the role on a new five year contract.
Rouvali grew up in a musical family, as both his parents played with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and he played percussion and studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
“This is the start of a great adventure, London is such an exciting place for orchestras, and the Philharmonia is at the heart of classical music life in this city” says Rouvali.
“The players of the Philharmonia can do anything, they are enormously talented and show an incredible hunger to create great performances. There is huge possibility with this orchestra, and we will do great things together” he adds.
Rouvali will spend ten weeks every year working with the orchestra both in the UK and on international tours. He’ll continue to work with orchestras in Gothenburg and Tampere in addition to the new position in London.
