Spectators at the Lahti Ski Games and FIS World Cup have been paying tribute to Finnish ski jump legend Matti Nykänen this weekend.

Nykänen died last Monday age 55, and while his later life after sporting success was plagued with years of criminality and jail time, a lurid private life, and time spent on a singing career, sports fans remembered his golden year of Olympic titles and World Championship wins.

Competitors from all around the world spent the weekend in in Lahti for the town’s 94th ski games and FIS Nordic World Cup competition.

Events included ski jumping, Nordic combined, cross country individual and team races, with more than 250 athletes from 20 different countries taking part.
