The first medals of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea have been claimed by three Nordic countries.

Norway and Sweden took gold and silver in the skiathlon event. Finland’s Krista Pärmäkoski took bronze, opening Finland’s medal count in Pyeongchang.

“I was able to realise my dream” said Pärmäloski, who skis again in the sprint event next Tuesday.

Pärmäkoski, 27, hopes to compete in all six women’s races and after the medal win her fitness remains good. Before coming to South Korea there had been some injury concerns.

The skiathlon event is a 15km cross country race where skiers have to change techniques half way through. They get to stop and swap skis and poles to change from classic to free technique.
