Winter Olympic athletes returning from Pyeongchang got an Air Force escort as they crossed into Finnish air space this afternoon.

A Hornet fighter aircraft from Karelia met the Finnair flight from South Korea and accompanied it towards Helsinki Airport.

On arrival, Olympians like gold medal winner Iivo Niskanen, the women’s hockey bronze medal winners, and multiple-medalist Krista Pärmäkoski were greeted by President Sauli Niinistö at a reception.

Minister of Sport Sampo Terho (Blue) is also attending the event.

Finnish athletes enjoyed only modest success at the Winter Olympics, finishing well down the medal table from Nordic neighbours like Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

Finns won a solitary gold, one silver and four bronze – although the total is roughly what the Finnish Olympic Committee predicted ahead of the event.

As recently as Calgary 1988, Finland came 4th in the medal table but has slipped in the years since.
